Our Story

My story with Australian Shepherds began when I was a little girl. My grandma gave my mom a female Australian Shepherd named Maggie. Maggie was the best babysitter, she treated us like we were her puppies and was so loyal! Several years later I kept one of her puppies, Guantes. I was hooked on the versatility, loyalty, and intelligence of the breed. My grandma then gave me pick of the litter for a puppy from the breeding of her amazing stud, Ranger, to Jerry and Sharon Rowe's girl, Dee. This produced Flint, my first real introduction to a stockdog. Flint and Guantes participated in 4-H Dog events with me. They excelled in Rally, Obedience, Agility, and Showmanship. Flint helped me exercise my 4-H/FFA sheep and goats. These dogs quickly became an important part of my life and family.

When Rhett and I were married we began taking Flint to work on the ranch. Flint had always been a high drive, instinctual dog, though he hadn't had many opportunities to do ranch work. As a 8 year old dog, Flint acted like he had spent his whole life as a ranch dog. We have since used our dogs to work on our family beef cattle operation. We appreciate the help of our dogs while we are working cattle. They offer low-stress cattle handling and put in the work of multiple human ranch hands. Our dogs are an important part of our family, they live with us in our house and travel everywhere we do. These dogs enrich our lives and help us focus on what is important. We want others to have the opportunity to have one of these dogs, to be their companion and someone they can depend on to work livestock.

Lor A History

Founded in 1969

Powers Kennel was founded in 1969 by my grandmother, Rebecca Anderson (Powers). She wanted to start a project for 4-H with her dogs and was told that she would need to produce puppies for it to be considered a project. With her mom, Loretha's, help she was able to start breeding the wonderful Australian Shepherds that she loved. Rebecca showed her dogs in a variety of events, as well as began herding with them. When she began veterinary school, she left most of her dogs with her mother. Loretha continued breeding and was a wonderful dog trainer, breeder, and enthusiast. In the 1970's Powers Kennel became Lor A Dogpatch, now known as Lor A Australian Shepherds. My grandma has shared her unlimited knowledge and has mentored me as I began breeding and raising dogs.

Lor A dogs are the same type, style, and build of those that my grandma started with when she was a kid. We strive to continue to preserve these foundation lines. We produce versatile, level-headed dogs. It is our goal to breed dogs that have sound minds and bodies. We want to ensure that our dogs fit the lifestyle of their owners and are prepared for new adventures. We breed for stock savvy dogs, with a strong desire to work. We also want them to be easy to get along with, biddable, and have that "off" switch so they can lay around the house with you. We understand that these dogs are going to be your companion and someone that you depend on for many years.
